With the 2017 we turn immediately to the 1990 because these two share some remarkable similarities. Both were mild growing seasons with plenty of rain and in March, not only were the dates similar but also the amounts. It resulted in similar ripeness, 13.0 Baume in 2017 compared with 12.8 in 1990, and harvest with the former picked on 10th April and the latter on the 12th. Most importantly, this means we have great expectations of the 2017 because its older sibling remains one of Moss Wood’s finest that continues to drink well 30 years later. At present, the wine is showing vibrant fruit aromas so it’s an appealing youngster and can certainly be enjoyed now. However, the underlying structure is firm and will support long term aging, just as it did for the 1990. This elevated and south facing vineyard in the Seaview sub-region of McLaren Vale has a reputation for producing very stylish and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The section of the vineyard chosen for this wine was hand manicured from pruning through shoot and fruit thinning to produce a very small but very special parcel of grapes. After hand harvesting, crushing and fermentation the wine was matured in seasoned and new French oak barriques and hogsheads for 16 months. Further barrel selection has resulted in the finest expression of McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep ruby with intense aromas of spicy black currants, attractive mouth coating tannins, mid palate fruit intensity and impressive oak notes all describe the great structure that this wine has now and will carry into the future as it ages very, very slowly, which is typical of great Cabernet Sauvignon. This outstanding wine is lovely to drink now but will cellar for 10-20+ years to come.

Dark aromas of black current, mulberry and cloves abound on a dense, rich palate, dotted with hints of cedar, dark chocolate and glazed cherries. The finish is elegant and persistent, culminating in a blueberry acidity and subtle minerality. Drink now or be rewarded when cellared.

“The Limb family have been a part of the viticultural and winemaking landscape of South Australia since the early 1920’s. The vineyard lies along the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley, near the hamlet of Seppeltsfield. Facing west, it catches the afternoon sun, whilst the shallow and infertile soils only allow the vines to eke out a meagre existence - yielding a very small crop of intensely flavoured fruit. In our Flagship Blend made out of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Malbec Blueberries, potpourri and summer berries dart across the nose, introducing darker flavours of glazed plums and freshly ground coffee. Pristine red and blue fruits with hints of violets on the entry, descending into dark coating tannin with flavours of wet slate and fine fruit structure to balance. A polished yet brooding finish of yet more blue and black fruits sits atop lingering tones of graphite and dark chocolate.

The Ashmead family wanted to show the world that Australia, the Barossa and certainly Elderton, can produce a world renowned and distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose shows dark chocolate and black fruits and olives, with the palate continuing the theme, showing these typical Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon characters, giving weight and generosity to the wine. Ripe tannins add structure while being supple and mouth watering.

This is the first release of the limited edition, Lot 71 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, made from a single block of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, and matured in fine French oak for 18 months. Awarded a number of GOLD medals and 96 points from James Halliday.

Fragrant aromas of mulberry, boysenberry and cassis combine with bay leaf and rosemary spice and graphite/dark chocolate richness. Fully ripe tannins frame a palate of varietal cassis and bay-leaf, while lifted perfumes of violet and raspberry contribute a freshness to compliment the richness of cigar box, dark chocolate and cedar oak spice. Built for the long haul, tannins are sufficiently delicate to drink now but will continue to evolve over the next 20 years.

Bramley Research Station, a heritage vineyard that once belonged to the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to indicate which varieties grew well in this region. This elegant style of Cabernet Sauvignon is showing a subtle integrated tannin with an intensely fruit driven palate. Hints of mint and eucalyptus lay subtly in the background whilst blackcurrant, red currant and raspberry dominate the fulfilling palate finishing with a cedar toast spice.

This is a fine, sturdily built cabernet of compelling intensity and longevity. A medium to full bodied wine with elegant, well integrated red berry and black currant fruit full the palate complemented by a succulent, fleshy but firm tannin structure. A hint of dark chocolate and savoury spice on the finish.
