2013 Chardonnay White

The Fruit for the Allegra Chardonnay was sourced entirely from the historic Rebenberg Vineyard on Mount Duneed, an area first planted with vines in 1858. The premium fruit comes from over 35 year old vines yielding less than one tonne/acre, and was hand-picked at 13.2 Bé and pH 3.25. Fruit was whole bunch pressed and run into 100% new French oak puncheons (450-500L) without prior clarification. Fermentation occurred with indigenous yeast. Following the end of fermentation, malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel with natural yeasts. Wines were left in barrel on gross lees for a further 15 months prior to marriage and bottling. Extended bottle maturation of this wine will allow the tight complex character of this wine to develop. 96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion "Low yielding 35yo vines from Rebenberg Vineyard at Mt Duneed, whole-bunch pressed to neq French oak puncheons, wild yeast, mlf and left on lees for 15 months. It’s a have your cake and eat it wine! Strange thing to say, but close your eyes, and you could almost imagine a Pinot Noir. There’s a good deal of high quality oak laying down sweet spiced biscuits and perfume over white cherries and plum, nectarine, and aniseed too. Medium weight, with juicy ruby red grapefruit acidity and flavour, distinctly flinty and delightful texture, offering a heady mix of restraint and power. Finish is long, spicy and crisply mouth-watering. Great Chardonnay, and I suspect, there’s more to come."

Mountadam Marble Hill Chardonnay

Vineyard: Established in 1972 the Mountadam High Eden Estate is one of Australia’s oldest cool climate Chardonnay vineyards. Situated on a unique rocky outcrop the estate commands an easterly aspect over Eden Valley. Season: The dry weather meant that when the night time temperature dipped, there were again late frosts, but thankfully not damaging Avon Brae. December and early January were warm but rains at the end of January and early March were welcomed. The vintage delivered exceptional ripening conditions. Wine making: The fruit was harvested at night and gently pressed using a bag press. The juice was fermented in 50% new French barriques, the balance in 1 and 2 year old barrels. The wine was intermittently stirred (battonage) throughout the maturation period. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation prior to racking and being returned to the same barrels. The individual parcels were racked from barrel after on average 12 months maturation in oak and the final blend carried out. Appearance: Straw Aroma/Bouquet: Developed characters of peach, nectarine and fresh figs. French oak barrel fermentation and maturation gives the wine secondary aromas of cashew nuts and mixed spices. Palate: A complex array of peach, citrus, cashew nuts, subtle truffle and spice throughout. The mid palate is round and buttery with a clean citrus acid backbone providing length and persistence. The Chardonnay is complex and displays gentle but balanced acidity. Food Pairing: Pasta with herb infused butter sauce, Snapper curry or a selection of artisan cheeses.
